KALVÅG - THE JEWEL ON THE COAST

The village of Kalvåg overlooks the open sea and lies on the island of Frøya in the
district of Bremanger in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.
Kalvåg was the Bremanger administrative centre until 1966. Today the village
of Kalvåg, with a population of around 600, has a unique collection of old waterfront buildings,
reputed to be the largest and best-kept waterfront environment in the county. Many of the old
wharf buildings have been restored and converted to provide accommodation. The harbour is very good, with spacious public quays and guest moorings with
pontoon jetties. Here you will find a grocery store, restaurant, café, fuel outlet, branch post
office and bank.
The Bontelabo bathing area has been made easily accessible for families with small
children. There are motorboats for hire for those who want to go fishing, or you can book a trip on
a fishing vessel for some deep-sea fishing. The Coastal Museum has a branch collection in Kalvåg
where you can see how herring used to be processed. Contrast this with a visit to the Domstein
plant in Kalvåg to how processing methods have developed over the years.
In the district of Bremanger you will also find such well-known tourist destinations
as Grotlesanden, the Hornelen cliff, rock carvings in Vingen and the old trading stations of Rugsund
and Smørhavn - all well worth a visit.
